The GERATOL Net

75 Meter Extra Class WAS Net

Frosty – W0FP SK

It is with great sadness, we share the news on the passing of our Chairman of the Board, and long time GERATOLer, Frosty – W0FP G # 2026

CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

For many years Frosty served as the Chairman of the GERATOL Board of Directors, and literally was the GLUE that kept the tradition of the GERATOL net alive and relevant. His efforts assisted in keeping the net going into it’s 52nd season in service to the Extra Class ham community.

PROGRAMMER AND CREATOR

In addition to his role for many years as our Chairman of the Board, Frosty designed, programmed and shared the tools we use to track progress for completing many awards, certificates and endorsements. Many GERATOLers, including myself, use GNEC and GLIST as phenomenal GERATOL tracking tools, and data resource material.

GNEC ENDORSEMENT TRACKER

GNEC allows ops to track their progress against many of the GERATOL Awards and Endorsements, via a quick glance on the opening page. The RED button designates a completed endorsement.

GLIST REFERENCE TOOL

GLIST allows you the ability to search via GERATOL #, D #, etc. to see if you may still need to work that station.

In addition to his work as our Chairman and Programmer, Frosty was ever present on the net, and would not only run the net every Sunday evening, but would be there each night to fill in for any NCS unable to make their scheduled NCS rotation. His location in Liberty, MO in the middle of the country, afforded him the ability to hear check ins from both coasts…

Frosty was also an avid County Hunter, and we believe he actually completed worked all counties, not once, not twice, but THREE times over !! He was also a member of Quarter Century Wireless Association and an Air Force veteran.

FAREWELL TO FROSTY

My recollection of him had to do with his laugh. When one of us GERATOLers would tickle his funny bone, he would let out a hearty laugh, to acknowledge your humorous comment.

We thank Frosty for his years of service and dedication to our net, and we would like to extend our sincere condolences to his Family and Friends. RIP Mr. Frosty !!

Please, fellow GERATOLers, feel free to respond to this post, and add your comments/stories/etc about Frosty. If you are unable to add a comment, simply send me your comment, and I will be happy to add to the comments section on your behalf on this POST. Send to: n1kl@arrl.net

Frosty was a true gentleman. He always had a nice thing to say about what was happening on the net. May he rest in peace. He will be fondly remembered. C

Surely, Frosty was a very unique individual and talented amateur radio operator! I first met him on the Geratol Net in November of 2011 when I got back onto HF after an 18-year absence. We had our first eyeball in 2015 at what the county hunters and mobilers call the “Michigan Mini” which is a gathering that the county hunting and mobiling community has in April of each year.

We immediately hit it off because we both realized that we had each spent so much of our amateur radio time on, and interest in, the Geratol Net… Frosty for 20 years since the mid-1990s and me during a much earlier time in my life in the late 1970s and 1st half of the 1980s. We literally spent hours and had fun with each other trading “war stories” about the Geratol Net and I will never forget my first time meeting him at that Michigan Mini in Traverse City.

Frosty indeed “went around” working all counties twice… he earned his 1st time USA-CA #1135 from CQ Magazine in 2006 and then achieved the 2nd time MARAC WAC-2 #392 just 3 years later in 2009. As everyone on the Geratol Net knows, Frosty’s net controlling skills were extraordinary and in 2010, he won 3rd place for the best net control on the county hunters’ SSB nets.

During the day when he wasn’t operating on the Geratol Net or programming Geratol Net software, he also enjoyed and was very active for a 12-year period between 2006 and 2018 running counties from his mobile station and helping county hunters everywhere increase their slot totals. True to form, he always helped others collect the contacts they needed for their Geratol Net and county hunting awards.

I know that everyone who is active with the Geratol Net feels the loss of Frosty, his friendly and kind spirit, and his dedication to keeping the Geratol Net running smoothly for all these past 30 years. I only wish I had met him earlier in my life and had more years as his friend.

Rest in peace, Frosty. I miss you!

I was very saddened to learn of Frosty’s passing. As a relatively new ham back in 2017 he was super supportive of my involvement on the Geratol Net. He encouraged me to try out net controller responsibilities….. eventually becoming one. I thoroughly enjoyed our many conversations a few minutes before the net began. He truly loved the hobby and loved caring for the Geratol Net. It is hard to think about the Net without thinking about Frosty. I will miss him………Steve Platt
